This is a museum quality reproduction of a Mesosaurus, an Early Permian Freshwater Reptile from the Irati Formation, Sao Mateus del Sol, Brazil. Certain fossils are just too costly and some are one-of-a-kind specimens that can only be viewed at museums. The replica Mesosaurus measures 340mm x 190mm.
This water-dwelling early reptile was known from only South America and Africa. The distribution of Mesosaurus supports the understanding that these great continents were once joined together as the Mesosaurus could easily swim rivers from one continent to another but a salty ocean would have thwarted the freshwater creature from crossing an existing ocean.
